The night featured a screening of impactful films that shed light on the experiences and challenges faced by 2-Spirit individuals. The films were both eye-opening and moving, sparking important conversations among the attendees.

The event was not just about the films; it was a night of advocacy. Speakers from various organizations, including the West Coast LEAF and the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA), provided insightful discussions on the current state of 2-Spirit and gender-affirming care in BC.

West Coast LEAF’s Report on Gender Equality: A key focus of the discussion was the recent BC Gender Equality Report Card by West Coast LEAF. The report highlights the province’s shortcomings in healthcare and economic security for gender-diverse communities. The findings stress the urgent need for comprehensive, inclusive policies to address these gaps.

UNYA’s Role: The Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) played a significant role in the event. Their mission is to support Indigenous youth, including 2-Spirit youth, by providing safe spaces, resources, and advocacy for their rights and well-being. UNYA’s programs are designed to foster a sense of community and empowerment among Indigenous youth.

The evening was filled with inspirational stories from 2-Spirit individuals and advocates. These personal accounts underscored the importance of affirming care and the positive impact it can have on the lives of 2-Spirit people.

The event also emphasized the importance of community support and engagement. Attendees were encouraged to participate in ongoing advocacy efforts and to support organizations working towards gender equality and 2-Spirit affirming care. All this was then followed by a delightful yoga session led by…well interesting characters that brought in a lighter atmosphere to balance out the heavy themes and subject matter that were on the agenda for the day.
