Jaysuits! Ever wanted to get the perfect combination of Indian spices & rice (Punjabi, Gujarati & South Indian!), African styled meat (think sizzling grilled meat from the heartlands of Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria) Middle Eastern foodsized portions (huuge platters!) and the perfect family dine-in experience all under one roof?

Well Well well, nestled in the bustling heart of Burnaby, is where I came across this vibrant culinary gem that brings all that to the forefront. Founded by the resilient and passionate Zeimina Bharmal, this restaurant was a gem I’d been looking for ever since I landed in Vancouver; a haven for food lovers like moi looking to experience a fusion of flavors (that right balance of tasteful spice & portion size) at an affordable price.

With so many mouthwatering options to choose from, diving into East-African, Indian fusion cuisine can feel a bit overwhelming; especially if you’re new to it. But fear not! As someone who grew up with these flavors, I’ve put together the ultimate cheat sheet and guide to help you navigate this culinary Narnia and order like a pro.

🍛Spiced Biryanis, Smoky African meats, and Middle Eastern-sized portions: The Menu at Cayenne Bistro🍖

The menu here is a culinary journey in itself. Feauturing an array of dishes that beautifully merge Indian spices with East African ingredients, creating flavors that are both familiar and novel. From the aromatic biryanis to the tangy and spicy curries, every dish I’ve tried is crafted with precision and love and cater’s perfectly to the taste buds of everyone, whether you’re looking for a palate from the North/South Indian diaspora, my country of Kenya/Africa in general or the Middle-East.

Biryanis

For All: Chicken, Beef, or Veggie—Delighting Vegetarians and Meat Lovers Alike!

Among the rice dishes, the variants of “East African Biryanis” stands out, a fragrant celebration of East African and Indian culinary heritage. Each variety; whether it’s vegetable, chicken, or beef, brings a unique twist to the traditional biryani, blending aromatic basmati rice with vibrant spices, tender meats, and fresh vegetables.

Another must-try is the “Hyderabadi Goat Biryani,” a dish that captures the essence of India’s culinary elegance. Slow-cooked goat meat melds seamlessly with saffron-infused rice, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate. Biryanis are not just meals but experiences, inviting you to savor the harmony of spices and textures that tell the story of a rich culinary legacy.

One standout dish is the “Choma Platter,” a delectable selection of grilled ribs, mishkaki & chicken marinated with a blend of Indian and East African spices. Another favorite is the “Malindi Seafood Medley,” named after a quaint coastal town situated in Kenya and right next to Tanzania (also famous for its Halwa!- a jelly like dessert). Prawns & fish marinated in a creamy and flavorful curry infused with the richness of a tomato base and a medley of spices. One dish that holds a special place in my heart is the “Kuku Poussin with Masala Fries.” This dish, featuring succulent chicken marinated in a fiery Kenyan spice blend called poussin, brings back memories of my after-school adventures in Kenya. Paired with crispy masala fries, it’s a perfect blend of heat and crunch that evokes the vibrant street food culture of my childhood.

Appetizers & desserts, such as “Masala Chips” and “Daal Bhajia,” (my childhood favorites!) are perfect for those looking to start and end their meal with a burst of flavors. Each dish tells a story, reflecting Zeimina’s journey and the cultural tapestry that defines her culinary style.

Community and Family: The Heart of Cayenne Bistro

A Personal Connection to the Flavors

As someone who was born and raised in Kenya, Cayenne Bistro’s offerings evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and connection to my roots.

My mother, a remarkable woman with an unyielding passion for cooking, spent years in the food catering business in Nairobi. She lovingly prepared meals for students at Oshwal Academy Senior High and Oshwal Boarding schools, always dreaming of one day opening her own small restaurant or café. Her journey, filled with dedication and culinary love, mirrors the inspiring path that Zeimina Bharmal has walked.

Zeimina Bharmal: A Story of Resilience and Passion

Zeimina Bharmal’s life is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering passion for cooking. Born in Kampala, Uganda, her early years were marked by upheaval and displacement during Idi Amin’s regime. The family sought refuge in Vienna, Austria, before finally settling in Sweden. This journey of migration not only shaped her identity but also enriched her culinary repertoire, blending the flavors and traditions of multiple cultures.

Important in Zeimina’s culinary journey is her mother Sakarkanu, who instilled in her a deep love and respect for food. From a young age, she was taught the secrets of East African and Indian cuisine in her mother’s kitchen.

Zeimina & her mother!

I had the pleasure of speaking with Zeimina about her journey and how her experiences have influenced the menu at Cayenne Bistro. She shared,

Everything I know about cooking, I learned from my mother. Her passion, patience, and artistry in the kitchen are the foundation of everything I do. I give her full credit for inspiring me and shaping my culinary path,”

Zeimina

Her mother’s influence is evident in every dish served at Cayenne Bistro, making each meal a tribute to family traditions and the rich flavors of her heritage.

From Nursing to Culinary Arts: A Passion Reignited

This journey eventually led her to Vancouver, a city she had always admired. Moving to Canada presented its own set of challenges, especially with the differences in the healthcare systems and the need for requalification in nursing. Undeterred, Zeimina embraced these challenges and explored various jobs, including accounting. However, her passion for cooking, deeply ingrained from her childhood, beckoned her back to the culinary arts.

Cayenne Bistro was born from this passion. The restaurant is a manifestation of her love for food and her desire to share the rich and diverse flavors of her heritage with the local community. Each dish is a fusion of traditional Indian and East African recipes, offering a unique and delightful dining experience.

In Sweden, Zeimina’s father also played a pivotal role in the Ismaili community by establishing the first Jamatkhana, underscoring the importance of community and family. Despite the cultural and linguistic challenges, she thrived, pursuing an education in business economics and later transitioning into a career in nursing. Her career path is a reflection of her versatility and deep-rooted desire to help others.

My family’s legacy is rooted in community and resilience. This has shaped my approach to running the restaurant, where I aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone,” she shared.

Her personal life, marked by her move to Canada and meeting her husband, adds another layer of depth to her story. Zeimina recounted how she met her husband at a car dealership where he worked, initially focusing on settling in Canada before their relationship blossomed into marriage. This personal journey, filled with support and love, is reflected in the warmth and hospitality of Cayenne Bistro.

A Culinary Haven in Burnaby

Reflecting on my own connection to these flavors and my mother’s culinary dreams, I find myself deeply inspired by Zeimina’s journey and her dedication to sharing her heritage through food.
