Date: July 7, 2024
Time: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Courtyard, 565 Columbia Street, Vancouver, BC V6A 4H5

Hey everyone, come join me down the magical rabbit hole that was this wonderful experience! Twas a perfect sunny Sunday (well there was a heat wave warning; but we Vancouverites are hardy), with a picturesque courtyard nestled in the heart of Vancouver alive with energy. Think of it as a festival filled with music, dance, food, and games—a perfect mashup of tradition and modern fun!

The vibe was electric! Colorful decorations, the smell of mouthwatering food in the air, and the sounds of laughter and chatter made it impossible not to smile. Everywhere you looked, people were having a blast—dancing to the beats, munching on tasty treats, and getting competitive with the games. The event perfectly captured the lively spirit of Chinatown, showcasing its vibrant culture and close-knit community.

Fighting for Chinatown’s Future

Vancouver’s Chinatown is a historic and cultural gem, but it’s facing challenges from gentrification and urban development. This neighborhood has been a cultural and social hub for over a century, but rising property prices and new developments threaten its unique character and community. Events like this one are crucial for preserving Chinatown’s cultural fabric and resisting the forces of gentrification.

The importance of such events can’t be overstated. They celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Chinatown while also providing a platform to advocate for the community’s future. Initiatives like the “Occupy 105 Keefer” protest and cultural festivals showcase the community’s resilience and commitment to preserving their heritage (The Georgia Straight) (The Georgia Straight).

An organization at the heart of these efforts is:

SaveChinatownYVR

A grassroots movement dedicated to protecting the historical and cultural integrity of our city’s Chinatown they play a critical role in advocating for the community. Having been instrumental in organizing protests, such as the opposition to the controversial condo development at 105 Keefer Street, the organization believes that such developments threaten the affordability and heritage of the area, pushing out long-term residents and small businesses. They strive to maintain the neighborhood’s unique character by promoting affordable housing and supporting local businesses.

Their impact extends beyond just opposition to development projects by actively engaging and promoting community events, educational workshops, and cultural celebrations such as this to highlight the importance of Chinatown’s heritage. For example, they have hosted events like

Big Fight in Little Chinatown,”

a film screening to raise awareness about the impacts of gentrification. They have also been involved in lobbying for affordable seniors’ housing and have worked closely with local governments to secure funding for preserving historical sites and cultural programs(Business in Vancouver) .

By doing so, they foster a sense of solidarity and pride among residents and visitors alike. Their efforts have garnered significant support, demonstrating the community’s commitment to preserving Chinatown as a vibrant and inclusive space for future generations and this event further underscored the need for continued advocacy and support to ensure that Chinatown remains a thriving cultural hub.

What Went Down at the Festival

The show was a spectacular blend of performances, food, and lots of interactive activities. As soon as you walked into the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Courtyard, you were greeted by the vibrant sights and sounds of the festival. The air was filled with the aroma of delicious food, the sound of live music, and the laughter of people enjoying games and activities.

The event kicked off with a series of performances that set the tone for the day. Local singers took to the stage, their voices filling the courtyard with a mix of traditional Chinese songs and contemporary hits. This was followed by dynamic dance performances that showcased a blend of traditional and modern styles. The highlight of the performances was a mesmerizing sword dance that left the audience in awe.

Adding a splash of color and glamour were the drag performances, celebrating diversity and self-expression with fabulous outfits and fierce acts.

But the fun didn’t stop there! The dynamic Super Trio – Melody, Celyne, and Sally – kept the crowd engaged with a series of games and prizes.

Their lively hosting and infectious enthusiasm made sure there was never a dull moment. From trivia to relay races, the games added an extra layer of fun, with participants eagerly competing for amazing prizes.

Food was another major highlight.

Cindy and her “ho yummy” wontons!

had everyone raving about their deep-fried wontons, while Dou Lok Fong Tofu offered refreshing tofu desserts. The San Lee Market added to the culinary adventure with a variety of traditional Chinese snacks and modern fusion treats. The aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air, drawing people in and adding to the festival’s lively atmosphere.

The highlight, however, was the sword dance. This performance was a stunning blend of martial arts and dance that left the audience in awe. The performer’s grace and strength were mesmerizing, and the synchronized movements created a visually striking display.

Each act was met with loud cheers and applause, reflecting the inclusive and welcoming spirit of the Chinatown Variety Show. The drag performances truly embodied the event’s theme of blending tradition with modern flair, making it a highlight of the day.

Food Galore: Tasty Treats and Eats

One of the biggest highlights of the Chinatown Variety Show was, without a doubt, the food. The array of delicious treats available was enough to make any food lover’s heart sing. Cindy’s Ho Yummy had everyone raving about their deep-fried wontons. These crispy delights were golden on the outside and bursting with savory goodness on the inside. Festival-goers couldn’t get enough of them, and the stall was constantly surrounded by eager customers wanting to get their hands on these tasty snacks.

Dou Lok Fong Tofu

offered a refreshing counterpoint with their delicious tofu desserts. Light, silky, and topped with a variety of sweet flavors, these treats were perfect for cooling down on a warm summer day. Each bite was a delightful mix of texture and taste, satisfying every sweet tooth. The tofu desserts were a hit, with many people coming back for seconds (and even thirds!).

Adding to the culinary adventure was

San Lee Market

which featured a variety of traditional Chinese snacks and modern fusion treats. The aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air, drawing people in and adding to the festival’s lively atmosphere. From savory pastries to sweet delights, the market had something for everyone. The food not only tasted amazing but also added a rich, cultural dimension to the event, allowing attendees to explore and enjoy authentic Chinese flavors.

The food scene wasn’t just about eating; it was about experiencing the rich culinary traditions of Chinatown. Each bite told a story, connecting people to the cultural roots and community spirit of the area. The variety and quality of the food on offer ensured that no one left the event hungry, and everyone had a chance to savor a taste of Chinatown’s vibrant culinary heritage.

Art and Hands-On Activities

It wasn’t just about passive entertainment; it was packed with interactive activities that encouraged everyone to get involved and have a blast. One of the standout attractions was the wonton wrapping station that happened a few days back. Here, attendees got hands-on experience learning how to wrap wontons from scratch, guided by skilled volunteers.

This activity was a huge hit, drawing people of all ages. The sense of accomplishment on participants’ faces as they crafted their own wontons was priceless. And, of course, the best part was tasting their handmade creations, which were delicious and satisfying.

Sights, Sounds, and Personal Reflections

Attending this cultural fiesta was a vivid reminder of why I love covering local happenings in Vancouver. Just like the Chinese New Year festivities and the Gastown Townhall event, this festival highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions while embracing modern expressions of identity. The energy, the diversity, and the deep-rooted sense of community made it an event to remember.

Looking back at my experiences at the Velvet Terrorism exhibit, I was reminded of the power of art and activism in bringing communities together and sparking important conversations. Both the exhibit and this event showcased how cultural events can challenge the status quo and inspire change. Similarly, it somewhat mirrors the experiences I got from performances such as the African Dream event I attended earlier in the spring; which emphasized the importance of resilience and hope, much like the performances at this show. Both events celebrated cultural heritage and community strength, highlighting how these elements can uplift and empower individuals.

Furthermore, it underscored the need for inclusivity and understanding within our communities. The advocacy and support seen at that event resonated with the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the Chinatown New Year celebrations earlier this year, where diverse expressions of identity were embraced and celebrated. The variety show, with its rich blend of music, art, and community engagement, exemplifies the kind of events that make Vancouver such an exciting place to live and explore.

It’s not just about the performances or the food; it’s about the stories behind them and the people who make these events special. Covering these events has taught me that they are crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose, and I look forward to bringing more of these vibrant experiences to my readers.
