Hello cinema lovers and curious minds! 🎥 If you’ve been following my blog, you know how much I love highlighting Vancouver’s vibrant arts scene. As I kick off my VIFF 2024 journey, I’m thrilled to dive into one of the festival’s most anticipated films:

Directed by Sean Baker, this film weaves together comedy, tragedy, and survival in a way that only Baker can, pushing boundaries in the portrayal of class, power, and the complexity of relationships.

As part of this year’s VIFF lineup, it comes with a lot of buzz, having already won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film promises an unforgettable experience, blending Baker’s signature raw storytelling with his penchant for dark comedy. If you’re looking for something more than just a love story, get ready for a gripping narrative that examines human survival in a cutthroat world.

A Modern Fairytale with a Twist

Anora follows the life of Ani, a 23-year-old Russian-American stripper working in Manhattan. Her journey begins when she meets Ivan, the 21-year-old son of a Russian oligarch, during a night of work. What starts as an exchange of money for companionship quickly transforms into a whirlwind romance, complete with a spontaneous Vegas wedding. But as the glitter fades, Ani’s dreams of wealth and security are challenged when Ivan’s powerful family discovers their union. Sean Baker’s film takes us on a wild ride through New York City, filled with humor, chaos, and moments of unexpected tenderness.

Baker’s latest film may kick off with a comedic tone, but it takes a sharp turn halfway through—reminiscent of Uncut Gems. The result is a perfect blend of humor and tension, constantly keeping the audience guessing; pulling us deep into the complexities of power dynamics and class struggles. Critics have praised Baker’s fearless tonal shifts, with IndieWire calling it :

“One of the most riveting and funny cinematic experiences this year.”

Character Dynamics & Performances: A Tale of Contrasts

At the heart of Anora is the relationship between Ani, played by Mikey Madison (who you may recall seeing in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ivan, portrayed by Mark Eydelshteyn. Ani, a seasoned worker of the Manhattan nightlife, is street-smart, independent, and fiercely protective of her autonomy. Ivan, on the other hand, is naive and guileless, a child of wealth who has never truly known hardship. Their connection starts as transactional but quickly morphs into something more complex—a relationship built on unequal footing, but with genuine, if misguided, affection.

Madison’s portrayal of Ani is nothing short of magnetic. She brings a raw authenticity to the role, seamlessly shifting between vulnerability and a “tough as nails” exterior. Ani’s survival instincts are always at the forefront, and Madison’s performance captures the nuance of a woman navigating a world that often exploits her but where she refuses to be a victim. Her performance is layered, conveying Ani’s inner conflict as she grapples with the security Ivan offers while understanding that his wealth can’t shield her from the harsh realities of their disparate worlds.

Eydelshteyn’s Ivan is the perfect foil to Ani. He embodies the privileged, carefree heir, disconnected from the struggles of the working class. His portrayal highlights Ivan’s charm and innocence but also his obliviousness, particularly in his failure to understand the consequences of his actions. The chemistry between Madison and Eydelshteyn creates a dynamic tension that drives the film’s narrative forward, with their interactions oscillating between light-hearted moments and intense emotional clashes.

The supporting cast, particularly the Armenian goon squad led by Karren Karagulian, adds depth and humor to the film. Their presence brings a chaotic energy to the second half of the story, as Ani finds herself entangled in a battle not just for love, but for survival. Their clumsy yet threatening attempts to annul the marriage bring moments of comedic chaos to the otherwise intense narrative, highlighting Baker’s ability to balance lighter moments with serious themes.

Visual & Thematic Elements: A World of Contradictions

Visually, Baker’s latest work excels in contrasting the gritty realities of Ani’s life with the opulent world of Ivan’s family. Cinematographer Drew Daniels captures these two worlds through a rich tapestry of New York’s diverse landscapes. The neon lights of Manhattan nightlife juxtapose with the cold, lavish interiors of Ivan’s world, creating a visual clash that underscores the class divides at the heart of the film

Baker’s choice to film on 35mm further enhances the texture and tone of the movie, bringing a sense of nostalgia and warmth even to the colder, more cynical aspects of the story. The quick-cut montages and extended, almost anxiety-inducing sequences mirror Ani’s internal struggles and the whirlwind nature of her relationship with Ivan. The use of handheld cameras during certain scenes adds a documentary-like realism, grounding the viewer in the raw, unfiltered reality of Ani’s world.

Thematically, Anora delves into the complex intersections of class, power, and identity.

At its core, the film is a critique of the ways wealth and privilege distort relationships, often reducing love to a transactional affair.

Ani’s struggle to maintain control over her life in a world that commodifies her body is a central theme, as is her realization that Ivan’s wealth can provide her with security but never true freedom.

Baker’s nuanced portrayal of sex work is neither romanticized nor demonized. Instead, it presents a deeply human story of a woman making choices within the constraints of her environment. The film also explores the idea of performative identity—how Ani and Ivan both play roles in their relationship to fulfill each other’s fantasies, only to confront the harsh truths that lay beneath the surface.

Social Stratification

At the heart of this piece lies a powerful critique of the dynamics between power, class, and personal identity.

Known for centering marginalized characters in his work, Sean continues his exploration of the American dream, this time from the vantage point of a sex worker trying to navigate a world that seeks to define and limit her.

The relationship between Ani and Ivan serves as a microcosm of broader societal inequalities. Ivan’s wealth gives him a sense of invincibility, enabling him to move through life without consequence. In contrast, Ani’s existence is one of survival, where every decision—whether about her body or her future—comes with significant stakes.

Baker portrays this imbalance with a sharp focus on the transactional nature of their relationship, where money becomes both a solution and a barrier to true emotional connection.

As Ani begins to question the fairy tale that she and Ivan have built, the film digs deeper into the uncomfortable truths about power. Ivan’s privilege, while initially offering Ani a way out of her difficult life, soon becomes another form of control. His parents’ interference and the looming threat of their disapproval underscore the idea that wealth brings with it a set of rules and expectations that Ani can never fully escape, no matter how deeply she becomes entwined with Ivan.

Moreover, Anora touches on issues of identity and self-perception. Ani’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she grapples with how much of herself she is willing to compromise for the promise of a better life. Her reluctance to speak Russian, despite being fluent, symbolizes her desire to distance herself from her past and forge a new identity in America. Yet, as the film progresses, Ani is forced to confront the reality that her new life may not be as liberating as she imagined.

Baker’s social commentary is subtle yet potent, using humor and irony to expose the absurdities of class dynamics. The film invites the audience to laugh at Ivan’s naivety and the bumbling attemp ts of his family’s goons to rein him in, but it never loses sight of the serious consequences that come with power imbalances. In this way, this becomes not just a love story gone wrong, but a broader reflection on the forces that shape our lives and relationships.

Final Reflections: A Captivating Collision of Comedy and Class Struggles

The stellar cast and crew delivers a cinematic experience that is equal parts comedy and tragedy, masterfully balancing the lighter, absurd moments of Ani’s journey with the harsh realities of class and identity. The film’s tone fluctuates between laugh-out-loud absurdity and moments of sharp social critique, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat.

Mikey Madison’s portrayal of Ani is nothing short of revelatory. Her ability to seamlessly transition from comedic to deeply emotional moments anchors the film and ensures that even its most outlandish scenes are grounded in authentic emotion. She brings a feisty yet vulnerable energy to the role, capturing the complexity of a woman who is both in control of her destiny and trapped by it.

Meanwhile, Mark Eydelshteyn’s Ivan is a perfect foil to Ani—naive, juvenile, and blissfully unaware of the consequences his wealth brings. Their on-screen chemistry drives the narrative forward, allowing Baker to explore deeper themes of power dynamics, gender, and the corrupting influence of wealth.

As the climax approaches, the film’s satirical edge sharpens, turning what could have been a straightforward tale of love and deception into a gripping and hilarious critique of societal norms. Baker’s use of humor never feels forced, and the film’s darker moments hit harder because of it.

Ultimately, Anora is a vivid exploration of survival, class, and the price of dreams in a world where power and privilege reign supreme. With its biting social commentary, sharp direction, and outstanding performances, the film leaves a lasting impression and cements its place as one of VIFF 2024’s standout features.
