THE FESTIVAL’S STORY
The rich history of Italian celebrations in Vancouver is truly captivating. In the 1960s, vibrant street parades began to weave their way through the city, setting the stage for future festivities. From 1977 to 1985, the community came alive with Italian Market (Mercato) Day, a bustling event that was the precursor to today’s festivities. This period saw Commercial Drive transform into a hub of Italian culture and commerce, echoing the lively markets of Italy.
Interestingly, the Il Mercato complex at the corner of 1st and Commercial derives its name from these spirited 70s Italian Market Days. This nod to history is a beautiful reminder of the enduring legacy and influence of the Italian community in Vancouver.
The Italian Day Festival Society has grown from a grassroots organization into a celebrated cultural event, thanks to the unwavering support of the City and Provincial governments, sponsors, and partners.
The festival has become a platform for giving back, raising funds for at-risk youth and mental health programs. It’s heartwarming to see how a community-driven initiative can make such a significant impact.
Commercial Drive’s transformation into Little Italy is a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian immigrants who settled here after WWII. Their influence revitalized the area, turning it into a bustling hub of Italian culture and commerce. From parades in the 60s to the Italian Market Day in the 70s, these celebrations laid the groundwork for today.
