⚔️🎭
Alrighty Jaysuits!; 2025 is here, and if you thought we were easing into the year, think again. Vancouver’s theatre scene isn’t wasting any time, and we’ll be ready to storm the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage from January 16 to February 16.
“⚔️All for one, and one for all!⚔️”

By now, if you’ve followed my love for chaotic, larger-than-life productions (*looking at you, Gateway’s Oliver! or that whirlwind that was and always is Miracle on 34th Street), you know moi can’t resist a good old-fashioned adventure with a touch of flair.
What’s more dramatic than sword fights, secret plots, and a trio of dashing heroes ready to save the day!; with one eager recruit trying not to stab himself in the foot along the way?
The ever so vibrant Arts Club Theatre Company is bringing this classic to life with a whirlwind of adventure and hats so fabulous they deserve their own standing ovation! Edmontonians, ate this one up, and now it’s our turn to dive into the world of 17th-century Paris (qui, qui) Packed with flying insults, sweeping romance, and that addictive energy that makes you wish you could join the cast mid show as I witnessed in the production of The GingerBread Men this past Christmas.
If your idea of starting this year includes a little swashbuckling and a lot of laughter; well, consider this your official invite.
🎭Laughs, Love, and Legendary Sword Fights!🎭
Here’s what’s docked in the treasure chest:
- Action-Packed Adventures: From dazzling sword fights to jaw dropping betrayals, every moment is crafted to keep you clinging to the plank’s edge (or laughing until you tumble into the briny deep)

- Unforgettable Characters: Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan are back – full of swagger, charm, and enough camaraderie to make you wish you had a sword-wielding squad of your own.

- Extravagant Costumes & Sets: Think feathered hats, leather boots, and a turntable stage that transforms Paris before your eyes. The detail is chef’s kiss, thanks to the genius of Cory Sincennes.

- A Twist of Comedy: Catherine Bush’s adaptation brings just the right amount of humour, balancing the high stakes with laugh-out-loud moments. (Fun fact: King Louis is as ridiculous as he is regal – keep an eye on those wigs!)

- Romance with a Side of Intrigue: Love, deception, and stolen jewels? Yep, it’s all here, wrapped in the sweeping drama of Dumas’ classic.
With Daryl Cloran’s masterful direction and fight scenes so seamless you’ll forget they’re choreographed, this production promises an experience that’s equal parts thrilling and hilarious.
🏴☠️Into the Musketeers’ World🏴☠️
Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers whisks readers away to 17th-century France, weaving a tapestry of adventure, mixed with camaraderie and a dash of political intrigue. The tale follows d’Artagnan, a spirited young man from Gascony, who journeys to Paris with dreams of joining the elite Musketeers of the Guard. Upon arrival, he befriends the legendary trio; Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together, they navigate a labyrinth of romantic entanglements and conspiracies that threaten the very fabric of the French monarchy.
Intriguing Tidbits
Historical Inspirations:
Dumas didn’t pull his musketeers out of thin air. The novel is loosely based on the memoirs of Charles de Batz-Castelmore d’Artagnan, a real-life Gascon who served in the French army during the 17th century. The historical d’Artagnan was a member of the Musketeers of the Guard, an elite force under King Louis XIII.
Serialized Success:
When it first appeared in 1844, it was published as a serialized novel in the French newspaper Le Siècle. Readers eagerly awaited each installment (much like yourselves fellow Jaysuits), making the story a cultural sensation. The serialized format allowed Dumas to craft cliffhangers and dramatic turns that kept readers hooked week after week.
This episodic style set the stage for modern serialized storytelling, influencing everything from soap operas to streaming television series. Imagine the anticipation of fans waiting to see if the Musketeers survived their latest duel— The 19th century equivalent of today’s binge worthy series!
Cultural Impact:
The legacy extends far beyond its pages. Its iconic cry, “All for one, and one for all,” has become a universal motto for camaraderie and teamwork, transcending its literary origins. The story has inspired countless adaptations across film, television, and theatre, each reinterpreting the Musketeers’ world in new ways. From operatic productions to this very stage performance at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, the tale has proven its ability to evolve while retaining its core essence.
⚔️Behind the Blades and Beyond⚔️
Let’s talk about the swashbuckling soul of this production and the creative minds bringing it all together.

At the helm of this swashbuckling adventure is none other than Daryl Cloran, a director known for his bold, innovative approach to storytelling. As the Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, he has a knack for breathing fresh life into classic tales.
Cloran isn’t new to tackling epic stories with a twist. His groundbreaking Shakespeare’s As You Like It, reimagined with Beatles music, drew rave reviews and showcased his talent for blending timeless narratives with unexpected elements.
Now, he’s brought that same creative flair to Dumas’ iconic novel, balancing the story’s high stakes drama with sharp comedic timing and visual spectacle.
By focusing on pacing and energy, he ensures that each scene flows seamlessly into the next. From the highoctane sword fights to the quieter, more emotional moments, the direction keeps the audience fully engaged. Furthermore, he also leans into the comedic potential of Catherine Bush’s adaptation, giving characters like the vain and flamboyant King Louis a chance to steal the spotlight with laugh out loud (yes I spelled that out…premium english fr) antics.
Let’s not forget that this would not be possible without a team. The cast and creative team have worked together to shape a production that feels fresh while staying true to the spirit of the original story.
The swordplay
You can’t have The Three Musketeers without a healthy dose of steel clashing, high flying action, and this production delivers with nine (yes, nine!) intricately choreographed fight scenes. Every thrust, parry, and dramatic leap across the stage is a testament to the artistry of Fight Director Jonathan Hawley Purvis, who ensures that each duel is a key part of the storytelling.
The choreography by Anna Kuman blends precision with flair, creating battles that are as much about character as they are about combat. Athos’ reserved yet deadly strikes, Porthos’ flamboyant bravado, Aramis’ refined technique, and d’Artagnan’s youthful energy all shine through in the way they handle their blades. These fights aren’t just about showing off skill – they reveal the very personalities of the Musketeers and their adversaries.
The dynamic set, designed by Cory Sincennes, plays a key role in elevating the action. The rotating stage, towering beams, and cleverly positioned staircases transform seamlessly into Parisian streets, secret corridors, and royal chambers. Each duel moves through these spaces like a dance, keeping the audience immersed in the chaos and drama of 17th-century France.
En garde!
Let’s not forget the actors who have have trained extensively to execute these sequences with both safety and style.
With a mix of seasoned stage veterans and fresh talent, many of whom I’ve become familiar with over the past year; this co-production between the Citadel Theatre and Arts Club Theatre Company is powered by performances that are as dynamic as the story itself.
Leading the charge is Daniel Fong as d’Artagnan, the wide-eyed, fiery newcomer who dreams of becoming a Musketeer. Fong’s portrayal perfectly captures the youthful ambition and courage of the character, balancing his eagerness with moments of heartfelt vulnerability. Whether he’s navigating the chaos of Paris or clashing swords with the villainous Rochefort, Fong commands the stage with an electrifying presence.
The legendary trio of Musketeers – Athos, Porthos, and Aramis – are brought to life by Darren Martens, Alexander Ariate, and Braydon Dowler-Coltman, respectively. Martens gives Athos a brooding, stoic intensity that hides a tragic past, while Ariate’s Porthos injects the production with a larger than life swagger and comedic timing that makes every scene sparkle. Dowler-Coltman’s Aramis is graceful and measured, adding a touch of refinement and wit to the group’s antics. Together, they embody the camaraderie and loyalty that have made these characters iconic for generations.
On the other side of the spectrum, Scott Bellis ( a mainstay and founding member of Bard on the Beach; whose productions I covered across my theatrical pilgrimage in summer of last year) as Cardinal Richelieu exudes menace and cunning, making him a formidable antagonist. His every move is calculated, his every line dripping with the quiet threat of power. Balancing him is the enigmatic Bahareh Yaraghi as Milady de Winter, whose layered performance captures both the allure and danger of this iconic femme fatale.
Nadien Chu, as Madame de Treville, commands respect and authority, while Farren Timoteo steals scenes as the flamboyant and hilariously self-absorbed King Louis. Timoteo’s physical comedy and sharp delivery bring a modern edge to the historical setting, offering some of the show’s biggest laughs.
The dual roles and versatility of actors like Alexandra Lainfiesta (Queen Anne and Kitty) and Jade V. Robinson (Constance Bonacieux) bring additional layers to the narrative. Their performances are both charming and heartfelt, with Robinson’s Constance delivering a romantic subplot that keeps the stakes personal for d’Artagnan.
