🎉HO! HO! HO!🎉

Jaysuits!,after a rather wet November; it’s the final month of an exhilarating 2024 here in RainCouver, and if you’re still riding that post-Taylor-Swift-concert high (I mean, who isn’t humming “Love Story” under the holiday lights?), it’s time to channel all that festive energy into something extra special! Let’s swap pop anthems & Luigi shenanigans from across the border; for another adaptation of Dickensian drama (Dolly Parton’s SMOKY MOUNTAIN’S CHRISTMAS CAROL is still on folks 😉) and cozy up at the Gateway Theatre for Lionel Bart’s :

OLIVER!

TICKETS HERE!

🎄

Running from December 12 to January 4, this beloved classic transforms Victorian London into a twinkling stage—just as magical as the city’s holiday markets and just as heartwarming as your favorite Christmas blend latte. Expect timeless tunes (“Food, Glorious Food,” anyone?), a cast of fresh talent, and a story that blends hope, family, and redemption into the perfect seasonal treat. If you’re looking for an excuse to dress up, grab a warm drink, and immerse yourself in a world of spirited song and dance, Oliver! will have you singing along in no time. Consider this your personal invitation to embrace all the holiday feels; and yes, it’s totally okay to hum Swift’s hits during intermission! 🎶

🎭 Dickensian Delights: When Victorian Grit Meets Holiday Magic

As we savor this chilly December air in RainCouver’s backyard—Richmond, where holiday lights glimmer and warm cups of cocoa are practically a handshake—Gateway Theatre is opening the door to another world entirely.

Step inside, and find yourself strolling through cobblestone lanes, guided by the gentle glow of lamplight in Victorian London.

In our production, Dickens’ London is a hard-edged playground — a mix of wrought iron and warmth. This isn’t the romanticized Oliver, it’s a dark fairy tale that balances comedy, tragedy and a fun bit of gothic horror

director Josh Epstein

Our guide? A young dreamer named Oliver Twist, who is determined to find a place where he belongs and the family he so richly deserves. ✨

Imagine Oliver’s journey as a kind of musical treasure hunt, each clue revealed through toe-tapping tunes and tender ballads that wrap around your heart like a cozy scarf. Along the way, we meet characters more colorful than a holiday parade: the resourceful Fagin, who collects young souls like sparkling ornaments; the courageous Nancy, whose kindness and devotion shine brighter than any festive lantern; and Mr. Brownlow, who offers kindness as naturally as we share holiday treats with loved ones.

This is a story that swirls with hope, resilience, and the sweet promise of togetherness (something we desperately need right now), as executive artistic director Barbara Tomasic so eloquently puts it:

“It’s themes of hope, family and redemption resonate deeply, making it a perfect fit for audiences seeking meaningful storytelling during this time of year. The thing about this play is it brings to light what’s important, which is community and finding people that you care about and something that you believe in. And we think, ultimately, it is a story about hope. And I think that that is something that we all need these days.”

As those timeless songs rise to the rafters, you’ll discover that even in the shadowy corners of old London, the human spirit can twinkle like fairy lights strung across a Richmond storefront.

TRIVIA! ✨

Fellow Jaysuits, time to pop open the holiday cracker of theatrical fun facts and see what goodies tumble out! Oliver! might feel as cozy and familiar as a well-loved Christmas sweater, but behind that sparkle lies a story that’s been enchanting audiences for decades. Did you know…

Dickens’ Classic Roots:

Before Oliver! danced onto the stage, it sprang from the pages of our one and only Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist—a novel beloved for its vivid characters and heartfelt quest for belonging. Think of it as the ultimate literary stocking stuffer: timeless, a bit cheeky, and always ready to stir the soul.

Lionel Bart’s Magic Touch:

Lionel Bart, the genius who wrote the book, music, and lyrics, gave the world a gift wrapped in unforgettable tunes. “Food, Glorious Food,” anyone? This festive feast of melodies has become a holiday playlist staple for theatre buffs, humming in kitchens and living rooms faster than you can say “gingerbread latte.”

Award-Winning Credentials:

With a mantle full of accolades—just like that friend who flexes their holiday baking trophies. Bart’s masterpiece scooped up a Tony Award and inspired an Oscar-winning film. In other words, story has been making spirits bright on both stage and screen for generations.

Gateway Theatre’s own history with Oliver! goes back decades, with JOSH EPSTEIN the director! He starred in the theatre’s 1992 production of Oliver! as Charley Bates, a good-humoured young pickpocket. In a full-circle moment, having this classic return to Richmond is like running into an old friend at a neighborhood tree lighting; familiar, heartwarming, and a lovely reminder that tradition and innovation can twirl together, hand in hand.

2024 Oliver! Director, Josh Epstein, is actually in this photo! Can you spot him?

Consider these tidbits your backstage pass to the show’s storied past. They add an extra sparkle to your theatre outing, reminding you that with Oliver!, you’re stepping into a piece of living holiday history—one that’s eager to sing, dance, and wrap its arms around you

🎭 Meet the Merry Ensemble: Cast That Brings London to Life🎶

Alrighty, let’s peek behind the scenes and meet the extraordinary crew and cast who are about to sprinkle a whole lot of holiday magic onto the stage. Imagine the energy backstage: musical scores warming up, costumes fluttering with character, and a creative team orchestrating everything like joyful elves in a holiday workshop. ✨

Guided by a Familiar Vision:

A homegrown talent who once graced Gateway’s stage as a young performer is now calling the shots. Josh returns as the director with the same excitement you feel unwrapping a gift under the Christmas tree. Talk about a full-circle holiday miracle.

Directing Oliver! has been an incredible opportunity to reimagine a story that has resonated for generations. … We’ve worked to see the story through Oliver’s eyes, capturing the vivid and fantastical way children remember moments,”
says Epstein. His vision blends nostalgia, wonder, and a dash of modern flair—perfect for a December night where tradition and new memories collide.

A Symphony of Song and Dance:

Enter Musical Director Sean Bayntun and Choreographer Nicol Spinola, the dynamic duo who orchestrate everything from heart-tugging ballads to toe-tapping showstoppers. Expect melodies that soar higher than a star atop a Christmas tree and dance numbers that keep your pulse racing like shoppers on Boxing Day. These two shape the rhythms and swirls of Dickensian London with the grace of figure skaters on a frozen pond.

Stage Magic, Personified:

Backing them up is an ensemble of 24 performers, including 11 youth, whose energy lights up the stage like holiday decorations dancing in the breeze. Once again, executive Artistic Director Barbara Tomasic captures it best:

These young voices remind us that the holidays are about fresh starts, open hearts, and sharing laughter with anyone who pulls up a chair.

Front and center is Rickie Wang as Oliver, whose hopeful voice and soulful gaze anchor the story’s beating heart. The established young actor’s Arts Club Theatre Company credits span Elf: The Musical, The Sound of Music, and Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, and he’s also set to star in season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix!

Anthony Santiago’s Fagin injects a mischievous twinkle into every scene, while Miranda MacDougall (Nancy, Mrs. Sowerberry) and Tanner Zerr (Bill Sykes) bring warmth and edge in equal measure. There’s Victor Hunter (Mr Bumble), Cecilly Day (Widow Corney, Mrs Bedwin), and Lucas Gregory (Artful Dodger), each carving out vivid personalities that pull you deeper into Oliver’s world. Daniel Curalli (Noah Claypole, Mr Brownlow), Suani Rincon (Bet, Milkmaid), Powell Nobert, Laine Gillies, and Kate Malcic round out a principal cast whose chemistry crackles like a yule log.

Designers with a Gift for Atmosphere:

While the cast enchants, the creative wizards behind the scenes add finishing flourishes. Set Designer Ryan Cormack crafts a world of wrought-iron frames and lamplit streets that feels like stepping into a storybook page. Lighting Designer Sophie Tang bathes everything in a glow as gentle as candlelight in a parlor window, and Costume Designer Donnie Tejani drapes each character in threads that capture the period’s spirit with timeless flair.
