🎄Christmas with Chor Leoni: Vancouver’s Must-See Holiday Concert 🎶✨

🎉HO! HO! HO! Vancouverites & fellow Jaysuits!🎄

If you’ve followed my adventures with music in this city, you know I’m no stranger to transformative performances. There’s something so powerful about artists who take the familiar and make it extraordinary. Last night? That’s exactly what happened with:

Christmas with Chor Leoni

❄️There’s a charm to downtown Vancouver at this time of the season; when the air is crisp, the lights from all the trees twinkling, admist the various holiday traditions taking center stage. This particular year in the city feels rather electric. It’s been a season of moments—some big, like Taylor Swift’s much-anticipated arrival in the city, and some beautifully intimate, like gathering for a concert that feels like a warm embrace on a cold Raincouver’s winter’s night. Among the highlights, for moi, there’s one concert that let me tell you hit all the right notes 🎶🎶 (heh). If you weren’t nestled in Burrard this December 19th (opening night incase you were wondering AND there’s even a few seats left for the last show at 8pm on Dec 21st depending on when you are reading this, so grabem while they last!, deets below!), you missed a moment that felt like a warm holiday hug. 🎶 :

There’s something about hearing “The Long Night” in a candlelit sanctuary. Pure chills (and not the rainy kind). By the time they hit an Irish jig twist, I was already grinning like it was Christmas morning. They have this uncanny ability to make you feel every note, and last night, they turned familiar carols into moments that downright soared.

This is your annual reminder: Chor Leoni isn’t “Lion” around when it comes to delivering holiday magic. They just recently set the Vancouver Playhouse stage on fire during the dazzling TRANSFORM FESTIVAL I had the privilege of covering.

🎶 Highlights That Hit Different

Alrighty, let’s talk about the moments that stuck with me; First off, can we give a standing ovation (again) to “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day”? The harmonies layered like the softest snowfall, cascading through the interiors of the church with this ethereal glow. But then, with this subtle shift, the tempo picked up and suddenly we were swept into something far more jubilant. It had that rare quality where you feel the shift physically, like the room exhaled along with the music. It felt less like a song and more like a warm blanket you didn’t know you needed.

Then there was “Angels We Have Heard on High”—but with that signature Chor Leoni twist. A lively Irish jig. The energy in the room?

Immaculate

It was one of those bold moves that could’ve gone either way. But oh, did it land. The energy radiating from the choir as they leaned into the lilting rhythms was contagious. I caught myself smiling without realizing it, and by the second chorus, toes across the room were tapping along. It turned the audience into participants, drawing us in not just with sound but with spirit.

It’s the kind of vibe that makes you sit up, smile, and think,

Yeah, Christmas is officially here.

🎻 Cameron Wilson (aka Vancouver’s violin wizard) was another standout. Whether it was soaring classical runs or playful folk-inspired riffs, his playing felt like the thread weaving everything together.

🎸 Keith Sinclair on guitar and Laurence Mollerup on bass kept the rhythm flowing like hot cocoa on a cold night—smooth, cozy, and exactly what the moment needed.

🎹 Tina Chang and Karen Lee-Morlang brought magic to the keys. Tina’s touch on the piano was light and bright, like fairy lights flickering through each piece, while Karen grounded it with this rich, expressive warmth.

But if there was one moment that truly hit home, it was their rendition of “O Magnum Mysterium”. Soft, expansive, and downright breathtaking. The choir’s voices lingered in the air long after the last note faded, as if the music didn’t want to leave either.

🦁Who’s Roaring This Christmas?🎄

The group behind this cherished holiday event carries a legacy that resonates with the heart of the season. For over “30 years” this ensemble has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural calendar, known for performances that blend technical brilliance with emotional depth. They’ve earned their reputation as musical lions, harmonizing tradition with innovation to create unforgettable moments.

Their secret weapon?

Erick Lichte, a conductor who knows how to mix tradition with that pinch of modern pizzazz. Under his baton, a simple carol becomes a journey, and familiar melodies suddenly feel brand-new. This holiday season, they’re bringing out the big guns: sacred classics, foot-tapping folk vibes, and fresh arrangements.

But the real magic lies in their connection to the community. Beyond the stage, they’re mentors, collaborators, and cultural ambassadors, weaving ties with local artists and inspiring the next generation of vocal talent.

🎶A Festive Feast for the Ears : A Yuletide Symphony ✨

If there’s one thing Vancouver’s classical music scene has taught me, it’s that the magic lies in the unexpected. When I attended Bach Untamed, I was struck by how a centuries-old repertoire could feel utterly fresh, reimagined through global traditions and modern sensibilities. Similarly, the Goldberg Variations unfolded as a story told through sound, with every note offering a new layer of discovery. With Christmas with Chor Leoni, I anticipated a similar alchemy (no pressure!): a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, crafted to resonate deeply with the audience.

This year’s program promised to be a journey through the essence of the season. And boy did it deliver! I imagine the world premieres—Joy to the World and Angels We Have Heard on High—will do for Christmas carols what the Goldberg Variations did for Bach: elevate the familiar into something extraordinary (once again…no pressure!). The symphonic Irish jig twist on Angels We Have Heard on High felt like it echoed the adventurous spirit I saw in the reimaginings at the St Paddy’s day earlier this year but in a different way,

That’s a potato tornado stick btw

The choice of “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day” as anchors for the program also spoke volumes.

Much like the deeply rooted themes in most classical compositions, these pieces carry a timeless quality that speaks to shared human experiences. Yet, with Leoni’s signature style, the best part was that it all felt so:

Effortless

And then, there’s the venue: St. Andrew’s-Wesley United. Having experienced the transformative acoustics of Christ Church Cathedral

Amplifing the voices of this ensemble, creating an immersive soundscape where every note lingers like a soft snowfall. It’s a setting that elevates music to something almost sacred, wrapping the audience in a warm, resonant embrace.

Performers and Guests: Vancouver’s Musical Elves 🎻✨

When it comes to it, the performers are the heart and soul of the show, and this year’s lineup is like unwrapping a box of perfectly harmonized gifts. Leading the way is the beloved Chor Leoni, a choir so intricately woven into the local arts scene (three decades and counting!) that their harmonies practically echo the city’s heartbeat. Under Erick Lichte’s direction, this group transforms sacred classics and festive favorites into performances that linger long after the final applause.

But this group aren’t flying solo this season. They’ve teamed up with some of Vancouver’s finest musical talents to deck the halls with unparalleled artistry:

  • Tina Chang and Karen Lee-Morlang (aka Vancouver’s piano power duo) are set to dazzle. Tina, with her “scintillating” touch whose piano performances have been lauded for their brilliance and depths. She’s a familiar name in Vancouver’s music circles, collaborating with the Vancouver Opera and other prominent arts organizations. Meanwhile Karen, with her knack for making classical music feel like a personal conversation, are bringing their magic to the keyboard.
  • Cameron Wilson, Vancouver’s genre-bending violinist, is a maestro of melodies that weave between jazz, classical, and folk traditions. Expect him to add a vibrant twist to this year’s soundscape.
Cameron Wilson
  • Keith Sinclair (guitar) and Laurence Mollerup (bass) round out the instrumental ensemble. Keith’s lush arrangements and Laurence’s rhythmic versatility promise to take each piece to another level—whether it’s a toe-tapping jig or a soul-soothing carol.

And then there’s the spotlight on modern composers like B.E. Boykin and Dan Forrest, whose works redefine what it means to celebrate the holidays through choral music. With new premieres adding fresh sparkle to the repertoire, this concert feels like Vancouver’s gift to the world.

What makes this lineup special isn’t just their talent but their deep connection to this city. These are the artists who bring the city’s creative energy to life year round, and together as an ensemble, they’ll wrap you fellow Jaysuits in a musical embrace that feels like coming home for the holidays and beyond.

St. Andrew’s-Wesley—Vancouver’s Seasonal Showstopper 🎄✨

If Vancouver’s iconic venues were holiday gifts, this one would be the shining star on top of the tree (just like the one recently lit up infront of the Art gallery). Much like the unforgettable echoes I’ve experienced at Christ Church Cathedral, this space promises to elevate the holiday spirit to new heights. Think of it as the city’s own sleigh ride for the senses, where music and atmosphere glide together effortlessly

In a year filled with unforgettable moments, from the vibrant melodies of the Early Music Vancouver concerts to the intimate venues that hosted Bard on the Beach, this place joins a roster of 2024’s cultural highlights. It invites the same kind of awe, but with a twist: here, the walls and windows seem ready to sing along. It’s an invitation to pause, breathe, and let the season’s magic wash over you.

The acoustics here remind me of Vancouver’s ability to mix the grand and the intimate, much like the storytelling vibes of the Chan Centre at UBC as you can see below. It’s a space that wraps around you, holding harmonies as snugly as a winter coat on Robson Street. Every carol and chant will feel tailor-made for you.

Reminiscing back on the electric energy of summer concerts like Bard on the Beach’s Shakespearean spins, it feels like the perfect bookend to a culturally rich 2024. Its soaring arches and glowing stained glass echo the artistry seen throughout the city’s creative spaces, setting the stage for a holiday celebration perfect for peeps of all walks of life.

Much like the immersive acoustics of all the cathedrals, particularly the Christ Church Cathedral earlier this year, this space is similarly ready to carry each harmony to new heights. Trust me; the interplay of music and architecture transforms a simple performance into an emotional experience.

And the visuals? Pure Coal Harbour elegance. The candlelit interiors, paired with the intricate play of light through the windows, create an atmosphere that says, “Welcome to Vancouver’s version of Santa’s workshop.” For a concert designed to bring people together, this setting is the perfect place for memories to take root and flourish.

This also mirrors the city’s knack for storytelling through spaces; from the stunning stages of Theatre Under the Stars to the city itself via The GAME PROJECT. For those seeking to close out the year with a heart full of harmony, this promises to be as integral to the evening as the music itself.

🎄Let the Music Fill Your Holidays ✨

So here’s the deal; Christmas with Chor Leoni isn’t over yet, and you don’t want to miss what’s still to come!

If last night’s opening was any indication, the final two shows are going to be electric. There’s something about catching a performance in the middle of the run; it’s polished nature, the choir fully in their groove, and the atmosphere buzzing with that “we’re really doing this” energy.

But hey, if you’re feeling spontaneous (or just really need to soak up some holiday vibes ASAP), there’s also:

The show on Saturday, December 21 at 8 PM? That’s the one. It’s the closing night, which means the choir will leave everything on that stage. If you’re the type to save the best for last, this is your moment.

Whether it’s a cozy solo night out or a festive group hang with friends or family, this concert is like pressing pause on the holiday chaos and letting the music carry you somewhere quieter, warmer.

Tickets are still available (but probably not for long); And if you’re under 35, those discounted tickets? Absolute steal.

This is Vancouver’s chance to experience holiday magic live; and fellow Jaysuits I promise, you’ll walk out of St. Andrew’s-Wesley with your heart about three sizes fuller.
