🎻 The Magic of Bach’s Wedding Music🎻

Central to the program is Cantata BWV 202, “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten”, often affectionately referred to as the “Wedding Cantata.” A vibrant celebration of love set to music that dances between delicate and jubilant.

The opening aria (or solo song for those unfamiliar with these terms), where the melody takes center stage, expresses emotion through a more structured, song-like format. “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” (“Dissipate, you troublesome shadows”), ushers in the warmth of spring with strings and oboe (an instrument similar to a clarinet but with a brighter, almost singing tone) intertwining in a vibrant melody, symbolizing the departure of winter’s chill. Each subsequent movement alternates between poetic recitatives(sections where the soprano delivers lines in a speech-like, expressive style) and lively arias, painting a vivid picture of love’s blossoming joy. The imagery peaks in “Phoebus eilt mit schnellen Pferden” (“Phoebus hastes with rapid horses”), where the continuo mimics the trotting of horses, capturing the energy of renewal and life.

The cantata closes with the dance-like Gavotte, “Sehet in Zufriedenheit” (“May you see in contentment”); (a lively dance that captures the joy of a wedding celebration) embodying the festive spirit of a wedding day. Known for its exquisite interplay of voice and instruments, this work remains one of Bach’s most cherished creations.

🎶Crafting a New Tapestry🎶:

O großes Hochzeitsfest

In a remarkable fusion of creativity and homage, Mields has curated a unique work titled O großes Hochzeitsfest, or ‘O Great Wedding Feast’ that promises to be a fascinating reimagining of Bach’s music. This Cantata is a thoughtfully assembled compilation of movements from various compositions by Bach and his family, woven together to celebrate the themes of love and union; central to the upcoming performance.

It begins with an uplifting Sinfonia (an instrumental introduction) from BWV 182, setting a joyful tone. The recitative “O großes Hochzeitsfest” (a speech-like musical passage) follows, poetically reflecting on the splendor of a wedding day. A highlight of the program is the aria “Mein Freund ist mein” (“My Beloved is Mine”),composed by Johann Christoph Bach, bach’s elder cousin, which expresses the beauty of love through a melodic form called a Ciaconna (a piece built on repeating bass patterns).

This innovative cantata also includes tranquil moments like the interlude from BWV 76, celebrating the harmony of marriage, and cheerful arias like “Ich bin herrlich, ich bin schön” (“I Am Glorious, I Am Beautiful”), portraying the bride’s joy. It concludes with the hymn-like chorale “Was Gott tut” (“What God Does”), expressing faith in divine blessings as the couple embark on their new journey together.

By seamlessly integrating these pieces; this creative reimagining offers us Vancouvirites a chance to experience Bach’s genius in a new light, making it accessible and deeply moving even for those of us unfamiliar with the intricacies of Baroque music.

💍 A Baroque Love Story: Dorothee Mields and Alexander Weimann Bring Bach to Life💍

Here’s the thing about Alexander Weimann for those unfamiliar with the orchestra scene here in Vancouver; the Pacific Baroque Orchestra’s beloved director, has a reputation for taking centuries-old compositions and imbuing them with fresh vitality. His previous works which I had the honor of witnessing last year; like the joyful experimentation of Bach Untamed or the layered depth of Goldberg Variations with a Twist (as you’ll see below), have shown how Bach’s music can transcend time, speaking to audiences in ways that are deeply personal and profoundly moving. He has this rare gift of transforming Bach’s music into something that feels as alive today as it must have centuries ago—a true bridge between the past and present.

Now, paired with the extraordinary German soprano Dorothee Mields, whose voice has been described as “soul-stirring” and “heavenly” brings a profound sensitivity to every note; whether it’s through the tender lines of Cantata BWV 202, possibly composed for Bach’s wedding to Anna Magdalena, or the imaginative twists of her Fictive Wedding Cantata.

Mields’ connection to Bach runs deep. In her own words, her journey with the composer’s music began with hesitation. She initially found Bach’s works “boring,” favoring the dramatic flair of Italian opera. That changed at the age of 16, when she heard a performance of Bach’s Cantata 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis”. The experience, as she describes, was a thunderbolt moment that ignited her passion for the Baroque master. From there, her path led to studying historical performance practices and working with some of the world’s most prestigious ensembles, solidifying her reputation as a soprano whose interpretations are both deeply informed and profoundly moving.

Her fascination with historical performance practices grew during her studies at the Academy for Old Music in Bremen. Inspired by legends like Emma Kirkby and ensembles such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Mields discovered the vibrant possibilities within Bach’s music. She embraced the idea that historical performance is not about rigid accuracy but about breathing life into the compositions, allowing them to resonate with contemporary audiences.

“I think what we name historical performance practice is actually very modern,” Mields remarked. “It’s about asking questions, researching, and finding interpretations that feel alive and authentic.”

Her approach involves delving into the context of Bach’s works; drawing on his technique of parodie (where existing compositions are reimagined into something entirely new) as well as understanding their spiritual and historical significance, and then crafting performances that bring their essence to life. As a result, Mields has curated a work that expands the soprano repertoire while celebrating the composer’s genius.
